  4. On November 6, 1860 Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States -- an event that outraged southern states. The Republican party had run on an anti-slavery platform, and many southerners felt that there was no longer a place for them in the Union. On December 20, 1860, South Carolina seceded. By Febrary 1, 1861, six more states -- Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas -- had split from the Union. The seceded states created the Confederate States of America and elected Jefferson Davis, a Mississippi Senator, as their provisional president.

Slavery: the state of being under the control of another person

Reason:a rational motive for a belief or action; "the reason that war was declared"; "the grounds for their declaration"

  6. It is a horriable thing... slavery., i mean. I believe it would have killed myself honestly. They were alweays getting beat. They got little food, little acomadations such as sheltor and food and cloths. Often "masters" would make the slaves sleep in the barns or outside. They would make them go for days without food for a punishment. I don't knwo how i would deal with government if we still ahd slavery. I would buy all i could and treat them like family. Or i would let them go.
Many people do not get the serious of slavery but if they were to take time to research it or care they probly would not have been such bad things happening to African Americans today. I blame white people for they way African Americans are treated and i am personally ashamed of being white sometimes.

Soldiers gave up on many things while being a soldier. They not only gave up their jobs, but gave up on what their families need. They were bought, and then sold many times before. They really never knew what was going on.

  9. Slavery is a form of forced labour in which people are considered to be the property of others.

Reason is a human mental faculty that is able to generate conclusions from assumptions or premises.

To be a slave it is like the slaves not able to wear shoes, they were never able to play like regular children, all they got to eat was little scraps of food.

  10. To me what it wa like to be a slave was horrible because you you got abused and you dont have your family with you. Also you have to have courage because you alone at night and no food hardly. You dont have good food eather. Also you dont have time to read or have a childhood. Its upseting because someone hase to own you and tell you what tou do, beet you, and call you names it sucks.

  11. I am Tequila and i am telling you about what i think it was like being a slave. Slaves had a very hard life they had no shoes and torn clothes. Slaves if they refused to work they got beat. Women were often used sexually. Men were often chained in pairs, shackled wrist to wrist or ankle to ankle.they were all the time crowded together usually forced to lie on there back. They had little to nothing to eat, They never had breaks, and were not paid for the work they had done. If the slaves were sick no one cared people still treated them like crap and made them do what needed to be done.

  12. Slavery , is very heartbreaking. it's like getting beat on everyday and it's like being a dog because all people do is work outside in the very hot weather and it's sad because they go without seeing their families and thats why i wouldn't want to be a slave.

They didn't get to chooes weather they wanted to work or not they didn't get paid. They didn't get a break any time they wanted if they were sick O-WELL. 14. Dear Len,
There are two main causes for the civil war in The United States of America. One is slavery. Many people in the north opposed of slavery, while in the south many people were all for it. This created conflicts between the north and south. Another reason is Economic and social differences between the North and the South. The south was mostly for farms while the north was more industrial. About.com gives a good amount of information if you would like to know more.
It was different for many slaves. Some were treated pretty well while others were treated very poorly. Some were whipped because the masters wanted to. It was tough to be a slave. Many families were split apart never to see each other again.
    Sincerely,
    Sara

  15. Dear Lee,
The U.S. War took place in 1860, when the presidential election took place. The war was actually caused by this election. The election was between Abraham Lincoln, John C. Breckinridge, John Bell, and Stephen A. Douglas. Lincoln won the election with 39% of the votes without any votes from the southern states. This was because they wanted to keep slavery. But Lincoln still won. The true cause of the Civil War was because the southern states were separated from northern and western states., and it caused conflict between them such as slavery and democracy.
    Sincerely,
Britteny May 5, 2010 Cottage One
